Homeopathy for Growing Pains

When you step back and look at the massive change and growth your child goes through from birth to early adulthood, it is no surprise that they may be experiencing growing pains.

Growing pains are a normal part of childhood. Children can have a range of symptoms from aching or throbbing in the legs, usually in the front of the thighs, calves or behind the knees. These symptoms are generally felt in both legs and are worse in the late afternoon or evening. Abdominal pain and headaches may also occur.

Homeopathy can help ease these pains, often within minutes of taking the remedy. I like to suggest tissue salts because they can be taken up to 6 times a day. CALC PHOS 6X and MAG PHOS 6X are two of the most popularly prescribed remedies for growing pains in my practice.

CALC PHOS is generally prescribed when children have a significant growth spurt in a short amount of time (think new clothes and shoes, and increased appetite). Pains shoot in all directions and are better at warmth and rest and worse with dampness, cold and exertion. This remedy also eases abdominal pains.

MAG PHOS is the remedy for when the muscles are cramping, especially when walking or running. Abdominal pains may occur during this time as well. This remedy will ease cramps, spasms and pain as well as alleviate any headaches.

When using tissue salts (6x potency), these remedies can be alternated as needed up to six times a day for growing pains.

Mineral support with MAGNESIUM , CALCIUM and ZINC are essential during times of rapid growth as well. Seek out the advice of a health care professional for age-appropriate dosing.

As we navigate the ever-changing world around us, it is important to realize that children are experiencing tremendous mental and emotional growth as well.

Creating rituals of reading, playing family sports, being in nature and playing games together or having a family movie night establish connection and predictability that create safety and security as your child goes through change. Being present, lying in bed talking at night, or when driving in the car can allow your child to share what they are experiencing in a sacred non-judgmental space. Gather a team; therapists, homeopaths, naturopaths, chiropractors, medical doctors, friends and family who can support you and your children through these changing times.

I always love to go back to the African proverb, β€œIt takes a village to raise a child.” You are not alone, find your people and gather often.
