Homeopathy for Seasonal Allergies

As the season changes, some people can be overcome by runny noses, congestion, itchy, watery burning red eyes, post nasal drip, itching in the palate and repetitive sneezing. Seasonal allergies can be irritating and annoying, but homeopathy can help to alleviate some of these symptoms. I like to look at all acute illness as a useful way for the body to fine tune our immune system. Allergies fall into this category of fine tuning as well. Because allergies often cover 4 seasons, constitutional treatment with a homeopath is the best long-term solution, but there are many remedies that can be used in the moment of discomfort. When differentiating between remedies, look at the sensation of the discharge. Generally with allergies, the main differentiation is the presence of burning or not.

Allium Cepa is the remedy to choose when there is profuse discharge from the eyes and nose. The discharge from the nose can have a burning sensation and can even burn or irritate the nostrils and upper lip. The watery discharge from the eyes is typically bland. There can be violent sneezing which is worse entering a warm room and better getting into the fresh air. There can be a hoarseness in the throat with a cough and frontal headache.

Euphrasia has an opposite picture to Allium Cepa and we can see profuse, bland nasal discharge with extreme burning in the eyes along with extreme irritation, and itching. There can be a constant tickling cough which gets better when lying down at night.

Kali Iodatum has an intense burning in both the eyes and nose. There can be a feeling of complete nasal obstruction with a rawness in the nose that can give a burning sensation with each inhalation. Morning sneezing can produce thick, yellow mucous and there can be swelling of all tissues affected by discharge (eyelids, nose, lips).

Sabadilla is the remedy to think of when repetitive sneezing is the main symptom in the allergic reaction. The sneezing gets worse in the cold, worse with strong odours, especially perfumes. The profuse nasal discharge is watery and can burn.

Wyethia presents with tremendous itching in the nose, ear canals, palate and throat. Extreme dryness of the nose mouth and throat, and a constant clearing of the throat with thick, ropy mucous. There is a constant desire to run the tongue over the palate to scratch it and may be seen as “clucking” of the tongue to relieve the itch. In addition to homeopathy, consuming raw, local honey can decrease the severity of your seasonal allergies as well as adding the supplements Quercetin, Vitamin C, D and a B-complex to help keep your immune system functioning at an optimal level.
